We’ll Make Sure Your Home Is As Safe As It Can Be—100% FREE

Old Seattle homes don’t have electrical systems designed for EV chargers, modern kitchens, HVAC systems, and everything else we plug in today.

The majority of these homes have 100-amp panels rather than the 200-amp panels mandated by law.

Plus many old panel manufacturers from last century, now bankrupt and gone, have a ton of problems:

  • Federal Pacific Electric panels have a documented failure rate of up to 80% to trip during an overload, making them a leading cause of house fires.
  • Zinsco (or GTE-Sylvania) panels have design flaws where the circuit breakers melt directly to the main copper/aluminum bus bar. This permanently fuses them into the “on” position, making it impossible for the breaker to shut off power during a short circuit.

  • Aluminum branch-circuit wiring was common in the ’60s and ’70s. A CPSC-backed study found aluminum-wired homes were 55 times more likely to have outlet connections reach “fire hazard conditions” than copper-wired homes.

At Volt Lab Electric, constantly worry about homeowners because we see these threats every single day.

The Safety Inspection Checklist

  • ✅ Electrical panel & breakers: Check for damage, overheating, outdated equipment, or faulty breakers
  • ✅ Old or unsafe wiring: Look for knob-and-tube, aluminum, cloth-covered, or deteriorating wiring
  • ✅ Overloaded circuits: Identify circuits carrying more power than they safely should
  • ✅ Grounding & bonding: Make sure electricity has a safe path during a fault
  • ✅ GFCI & AFCI protection: Check for proper shock and fire protection
  • ✅ Outlets & switches: Inspect for loose, damaged, ungrounded, or improperly wired devices
  • ✅ Heat & arcing damage: Look for scorching, buzzing, melting, or other warning signs
  • ✅ DIY or outdated electrical work: Flag unsafe splices, additions, or older work that may need attention

Shun Cook Seattle

I’m really glad I found VoltLab Electric. Evan, the owner, absolutely went above and beyond. He was quick to respond, showed up on time, and made the whole process super smooth. What really stood out was how he handled some pretty tricky lighting installations in my home but he figured it all out with no stress. On top of that, he’s incredibly easy to talk to, explains everything clearly, and creates a comfortable, respectful environment. Definitely someone I’ll be calling again for future projects.

Everett Billingslea Seattle

Evan showed up on time and worked diligently until the job was done. He guessed it would take a half day, but due to complications in my 1917 house wiring it took until 7:00 pm. He did not complain and was patient explaining things as I shadowed him trying to learn what I could. He’s a pleasure to work with and gave me a fair price.

Annie Dullum Alki

Evan came out for an electrical project on pretty short notice and did a quick and efficient job. He explained how the expensive options weren’t actually the best for what we needed and he gave us a good understanding of how our home electrical system works which will help us a ton in the long run. He is definitely our go to electrician for now on!
