Panel Upgrade: From Outdated And Faulty To Convenient and Modern
A homeowner in Mercer Island noticed that some of her outlets stopped working. The culprit was a nearly 80-year old breaker and the dead outlet was a warning signal of decay.
Her home had what is known as a “knob and tube” panel which were popular in the 1940s. These panels actually insulated their wiring with cotton cloth which over the decades tend to fall apart. Housed alongside wood beams, this was a significant safety hazard and the only safe option was a new panel, pictured here being installed.
The original panel was installed indoors over a washer/drier unit and wasn’t up to code. We moved the panel location to a safer outdoor location and replaced with a safer, more modern model which fixed her outlet power issue as well as the fire hazard.

I’m really glad I found VoltLab Electric. Evan, the owner, absolutely went above and beyond. He was quick to respond, showed up on time, and made the whole process super smooth. What really stood out was how he handled some pretty tricky lighting installations in my home but he figured it all out with no stress. On top of that, he’s incredibly easy to talk to, explains everything clearly, and creates a comfortable, respectful environment. Definitely someone I’ll be calling again for future projects.
Evan showed up on time and worked diligently until the job was done. He guessed it would take a half day, but due to complications in my 1917 house wiring it took until 7:00 pm. He did not complain and was patient explaining things as I shadowed him trying to learn what I could. He’s a pleasure to work with and gave me a fair price.
Evan came out for an electrical project on pretty short notice and did a quick and efficient job. He explained how the expensive options weren’t actually the best for what we needed and he gave us a good understanding of how our home electrical system works which will help us a ton in the long run. He is definitely our go to electrician for now on!
