Old Seattle homes don’t have electrical systems designed for EV chargers, modern kitchens, HVAC systems, and everything else we plug in today.
The majority of these homes have 100-amp panels rather than the 200-amp panels mandated by law.
Plus many old panel manufacturers from last century, now bankrupt and gone, have a ton of problems:
- Federal Pacific Electric panels have a documented failure rate of up to 80% to trip during an overload, making them a leading cause of house fires.
- Zinsco (or GTE-Sylvania) panels have design flaws where the circuit breakers melt directly to the main copper/aluminum bus bar. This permanently fuses them into the “on” position, making it impossible for the breaker to shut off power during a short circuit.
- Aluminum branch-circuit wiring was common in the ’60s and ’70s. A CPSC-backed study found aluminum-wired homes were 55 times more likely to have outlet connections reach “fire hazard conditions” than copper-wired homes.
At Volt Lab Electric, constantly worry about homeowners because we see these threats every single day.

What Our Customers Say About Us
Evan was methodical and careful, a quality I prize in electricians. He was able to keep up a running commentary on the work he was doing, and helped me understand exactly what the significance of each choice. He helped with getting the inspection scheduled and it passed inspection easily.
It was fortunate for me to connect with this Electrician I would never consider calling or using any other Electrician this man is trustworthy, efficient and a gentleman to deal with no need to consider anyone else. He will do the job right for you!
I called Volt Lab on Saturday morning and they were accommodating and quick. I told them I had a choir rehearsal and needed evening service. No problem. At 5pm my issues were solved! I love honesty and transparency, and I especially love skilled and efficient service. If you need electrical work, choose Evan Cade and Volt Lab!!
I’m really glad I found VoltLab Electric. Evan, the owner, absolutely went above and beyond. He was quick to respond, showed up on time, and made the whole process super smooth. What really stood out was how he handled some pretty tricky lighting installations in my home but he figured it all out with no stress. On top of that, he’s incredibly easy to talk to, explains everything clearly, and creates a comfortable, respectful environment. Definitely someone I’ll be calling again for future projects.
Evan showed up on time and worked diligently until the job was done. He guessed it would take a half day, but due to complications in my 1917 house wiring it took until 7:00 pm. He did not complain and was patient explaining things as I shadowed him trying to learn what I could. He’s a pleasure to work with and gave me a fair price.
Evan came out for an electrical project on pretty short notice and did a quick and efficient job. He explained how the expensive options weren’t actually the best for what we needed and he gave us a good understanding of how our home electrical system works which will help us a ton in the long run. He is definitely our go to electrician for now on!
